Inexpensive Hearing Aids - It's Not A Contradiction
By David Faulkner
Have you hard the one about Angus the thrifty Scotsman, who, realizing his hearing was not what it used to be, could not bring himself to spend the money for a hearing aid? Being as canny as he was penny-wise, he solved the problem by taking a piece of string which he had been saving for years, tying it to a button which he had been saving even longer, and inserting the button into his ear and the string into his pocket.
Angus still could not hear any better, but all his friends accommodated his “hearing aid” by raising their voices and enunciating their words.
If you are having difficulty hearing, you can also try making a fake hearing aid and see if people start speaking more clearly in deference to your perceived disability, or you can do the responsible thing and go to an audiologist to determine the cause of your hearing trouble. And, if an honest–to-goodness hearing aid is called for, you can then start looking for good but reasonably priced ones.
If you have had an audiologist test your hearing and diagnose you with mild to moderate hearing loss, you may not need a hearing aid with advanced technological features, and if not, the number of inexpensive hearing aids from which you can choose is quite large.
Essential Features
Even the most inexpensive hearing aids which you are considering should be equipped with microphones to gather sounds and amplifiers to magnify them so that they are audible to you. Inexpensive hearing aids will also have basic transmitters to project the magnified sounds into your ear, and fresh batteries to power their entire circuitry.
Some inexpensive hearing aids even contain directional microphones, which let you program them to face the sounds coming from the direction in which you are looking, and filter out hose around you. This feature is great for when you are trying to have a conversation in a crowded environment.
Where To Look For Inexpensive Hearing Aids
You can do an Internet search for inexpensive hearing aids wholesalers, and find plenty of models; they may not be custom-fitted to the contours of your ear, but if you can be happy with a behind-the-ear hearing aid there are plenty of them available at discounted prices.
And if you’re in the US and facing real financial hardship, Audients is a program which can get inexpensive hearing aids provided you, as an individual, do not make more than $24,500 per year and $8500 for each additional member of your household. The Audients non-profit program provides you with a hearing exam from an audiologist belonging to their national network, inexpensive hearing aids discounted between 30% and 75%, and follow-up exams.
