Coping with Hearing Loss
By Val Bedard
Hearing loss happens to most people gradually over a period of 7-9 years. Over time, your personality starts to change to accommodate your hearing loss. Perhaps you once loved going to parties and now you find yourself declining invitations and making excuses not to go. Perhaps you enjoyed going to church but now find yourself not wanting to go.
I find myself inviting friends over and almost forcing them to stay around the dining room to talk after dinner rather than moving to the living room. I can hear them so much better around the dining room table than across the expanse of the living room. Our living room is not big by stretch of the imagination, but it is enough of a distance to make a huge difference on being able to hear everyone well. I was so comfortable and relaxed around the dining room table, keeping up with conversation fairly well and now the thought of moving away from that means that I will have to work hard to listen again. Moan, do I have to?
It is important to communicate with your friends and family and explain that it is better for me to stay around the dining room table. So far, no one has ever had a problem. I often get the response such as “I never thought of that before”, “I didn’t know that”, “That helps me to better understand your hearing loss, thanks for sharing”. I am usually filled with a great sense of relief and joy, “they understand”.
I often agonize whether or not to say anything, and then I when I screw up my courage to say something, they are so casual and understanding, “Sure, no problem”, that I think to myself, whew, why did I wait so long? 7-9 years is a long time, almost a decade…..can you remember something that you were doing 7-9 years ago that you’re still doing today? Not doing today?
