Hearing Aid Prices- What Are You Paying For?
By Alvin Toh
There are a variety of factors that go into making up hearing aid prices. Besides paying for the hearing aid, there are other costs associated with medical examination, hearing test, adjustments, technology, batteries, warranty and service. These costs cannot be avoided altogether. Nevertheless, if you compare and check out various dealers, you should be able to find a hearing aid that fits your budget and meets your hearing needs.
Medical Examination And Hearing Test
A medical examination is the first and important step to determining the cause of your hearing loss. A doctor can diagnose if your hearing problem is a medical condition that can be treated. Some hearing problems can be corrected, either completely or partially. Many insurance programs cover the medical examination, so you are only required to contribute part of the medical cost.
Once your doctor has ruled out any underlying medical problem, you'll need to take a hearing test to determine the degree of your hearing loss and the most appropriate style of hearing aid for you.
Hearing Aid Technology
The very first hearing aids were analog which only provided basic sound amplification. With the advancement of hearing aid technology come programmable and digital hearing aids. Digital technology offers the best sound quality and amplification, eliminating distortion of very loud noises. Generally, digital hearing aids are the most expensive, but some hearing aid manufacturers such as Siemens offer them in low, mid or high range to suit every budget, lifestyle and hearing loss.
Hearing aid prices increase with each added features such as adjustable volume control, directional microphone, remote control, Bluetooth and wireless technology. So, expect to pay more for hearing aids with many features.
Warranty
A hearing aid purchased from a reputable distributor or audiologist will be accompanied by a warranty for one year or more. Some warranties cover damage to the hearing that is due to faulty design, manufacturing or fitting while other warranties extend beyond that to encompass damage or problems that are not the fault of design, manufacture or fitting. Usually, they will replace the hearing aid for free or will charge you a minimal refit fee. A warranty is very beneficial because the manufacturer absorbs the costs instead of you.
Batteries
Battery replacement is an ongoing cost of maintaining your hearing aid. Shop around to find batteries with the lowest possible price. Buy from major retailers online or offline. It's best to shop at stores with high turnover so you can be sure to get new and fresh batteries that can last longer.
Research shows that only 1 in 5 people who could benefit from hearing aids actually wear them. A hearing problem can leave you feeling isolated. It can cause you to shy away from social situations and personal interactions with others. Hearing aids can help to improve your hearing ability and quality of life. Do your research and you are bound to find a quality hearing aid at an affordable price.
