Understanding Your Hearing Loss
By Val Bedard
It is important to keep a healthy self-esteem when coping with and understanding your hearing loss. It is easy to fall into that trap and be lured into that nice quiet “world of silence”, “I’ll just stay home and relax”, “they all mumble too much anyway”, “it’s too hard for me to keep up with the conversation”.
We start to think of hearing loss as defining who we are, forgetting it is just an experience that we’re living with, just as getting married, getting your first job, having your first child, buying your first home, getting your first grandchild, retiring from work.
All of these experiences have shaped you to who you are today, a full and enriched human being with a lifetime of experiences that are available to be shared. As I have matured, I have gained a greater sense of inner confidence that I did not have before and now realize that I am much more than my hearing loss.
While growing up, I focused a lot on the fact that I had a hearing loss and had to wear two hearing aids. Poor me! Just like any other teenager or young adult, I wanted desperately to be like everyone else. Now that I am older, I realize that I am first a person who happens to have a hearing loss. Just as I am a person who got married in my late 20’s, just as I am a person who has worked in the legal industry for nearly 20 years before embarking on an adventure working in the television industry. As the years went by, I realized that it was my skills and abilities that got me work in the legal and television industries. No one seemed to be bothered about my hearing loss, except me. Maybe if I lightened up and just did my job, that was all that really mattered. Gradually over time I got so busy living my life that I was able to almost forget about my hearing loss. Now I am just a person who owns her own business selling assistive listening devices and loves helping other people learn to live with their own hearing loss.
Val Bedard has a profound hearing loss since birth. She owns her own business Hear Well Services Ltd.
