It's not just adults that can develop hearing difficulties, children are also exposed to developing such conditions for a number of reasons. Children who experience hearing difficulties may not develop the necessarily speech and language skills, the lack of these skills can hinder the child for the rest of their life.
This is why hearing aids are so important for children, there are hearing aids designed specifically for children. Hearing aids are suitable for children of an age, and can be fitted to children as young as 4 weeks old.
When the child is so young, it can be difficult to know whether or not your child is experiencing difficulties hearing. If you do suspect your child may be having trouble hearing then you should take your child to a doctor as soon as possible. Treatment can only begin once the condition has been diagnosed.
There are numerous different types of hearing loss, some of these are hereditary. If there is a history of hearing loss in your family then your children are exposed to a greater risk of developing hearing loss conditions such as sensorineural hearing loss.
Hearing trouble can be as a result of some form of head trauma, or certain diseases can cause hearing loss. Bacterial meningitis is an example of a disease that can cause hearing loss.
If your child seems to have difficulty grasping the basic language skills, it might not be because of a learning difficulty, it could just as easily be caused by a hearing problem. Children learn how to speak by listening to others, therefore good hearing is paramount in the child developing good language skills.
It can be difficult to choose the correct hearing aid for a child, young children often struggle to adjust the hearing aid settings for different environments.
It's not unusual for a child's hearing to change as they get older, and so their hearing must be constantly monitored. The ear mould fits inside the ear of the child, as the child grows this may need changing.
The most popular form of hearing aids for children are the ones that fit behind the ear, this form is easy for parents to monitor, and also easier to control. It is the most durable form of hearing aid, which is why it's so ideal for children. Behind the ear aids are also very easy to clean, and the ear moulds can continually be replaced if required.
It's a good idea to purchase a hearing aid that can be connected to other devices, many kids want to use assistive educational technology while they are at school for example.
Digital hearing aids offer many more features than analog ones, and they are also much more flexible. Digital hearing aids are normally recommended for children due to this, and the fact that the sound is so much better than the analog varieties.
When a parent is deciding on which hearing aid to buy their children, often top of the list for features are telecoils. Telecoils can be used when on the phone and with a variety of different devices.
It's never good to find out that your child is suffering from hearing loss, but there is a solution. The sooner the condition is diagnosed, the sooner a solution can be found.
