Hearing Aid - Why Go Digital?
By Mandy Fain

Digital hearing aids offer many more features and options than their analog equivalents and because of this they are much more expensive. The advantages of digital hearing aids do make them extremely popular though.

First we need to establish the difference between analog and digital hearing aids. Analog aids are simply sound amplifier circuits. They perceive sound through a microphone, an amplifier circuit makes it louder and then a receiver conveys this amplified sound into the ear. Digital aids are a step further where they receive analog sound waves and convert them into digital signals (patterns of high and low). These digital signals are then used to automatically reduce or amplify sound depending on the need.

Advantages of converting waves into digital signals include noise reduction, speech enhancement and recognition, and feedback and echo reduction. Noise reduction makes it possible to reduce annoyance in sound such as low frequency sounds. It also makes the idea of speech recognition possible. Notch filtering is used to reduce feedback that is sometimes a problem for wearers of analog hearing aids. The most common cause of feedback is movement of jaw or swallowing.

Digital href="http://www.firsthearingaids.com/hearingloss/behind_the_ear_hearing_aids.html">hearing aids come in nearly all kinds of styles such as behind-the-ear and in-the-ear. They are very easy to install and operate due to their self-adjusting capabilities. Programmable analog hearing aids are somewhat similar to digital hearing aids but their ability is still limited because they are unable to automatically adjust, the user always has to change settings manually.

Directional microphones can be used with digital hearing aids which help to reduce background noise and concentrate on what is directly in front of the user. This technology is also known as dual microphone capability. If you want to capture everything that is going on around you, you can simply switch off the directional microphone.

Directional microphones can be added to an analog aid, however digital signal processing makes it much more beneficial to the user. The volume of analog aids has to be adjusted accordingly when the user is in a loud environment, however digital aids can automatically adjust. They are able to ˇ®normalize' the volume, digital aids are ideal for all types of environments.

All in all digital hearing aids are characterized by their ease-of-use, enhanced flexibility and wide range of features that can be added to make them more powerful. Make sure that you discuss your needs with your audiologist before buying a hearing aid.
