Hearing Aids: An Introduction
By Briana Liebmann
A hearing aid is an electronic device which is inserted into the outer ear canal. It works by amplifying and clarifying sound waves in order for the patient to experience louder and clearer hearing.
When sound enters the hearing aid, this amazing little device will receive the sound through a microphone and convert it into an electrical signal. This signal will then be amplified and then projected through a speaker into the ear.
Before choosing a hearing aid, consult with your doctor on the right hearing aid for you. After a diagnosis, if you are in need of a hearing aid, your doctor will prescribe one of four different types of devices:
1. In-the-Ear (ITE): These little gadgets hide inside the outer ear and serve relief from mild to severe hearing impairments. ITEs are usually pretty durable but can be damaged by ear wax, drainage and any other liquids.
2. Behind-the-Ear (BTE): These devices are fitted behind the ear and are connected to an earmold which is hidden inside the outer ear. This type of hearing aid is usually worn by people with mild to profound hearing loss and can also be damaged by ear wax and/or drainage.
3. In-the-Canal (INC): Fully customizable and available in two sizes, people use this device for mild to moderately severe hearing impairment. these devices are so small, they easily fit completely inside the ear canal. Unfortunately, they are difficult to remove or adjust and are not recommended for young children.
4. Body Aid: This device is strictly for people with profound hearing loss. The aid itself is worn on a belt or in a pocket and is connected to the ear by means of a wire. this is not usually recommended because of the size but is very effective because of the many more options it allows.
Many hearing aid providers are available online. although, some considerations should be thought of before buying hearing aids such as design, cost, refunds, warranty, and customer service. We recommend browsing around for the best deals and the best business suited to your personal preference.
